How to Calculate IP Subnets & CIDR Masks
- 1
Enter any IPv4 address along with its CIDR mask prefix (e.g. 10.0.0.0/24 or 172.16.0.0/16).
- 2
Adjust the CIDR slider or click quick presets (/8, /16, /24, /28, /30) to instantly recalculate network boundaries.
- 3
Review the usable IP host range, broadcast address, and wildcard mask for router or firewall configuration.
- 4
Switch to the IPv6 section to calculate prefix blocks and /64 subnets for cloud VPC deployments.
IP Subnetting & CIDR FAQ
Why are 2 host addresses subtracted from total hosts in IPv4?
In standard IPv4 subnets, the very first address represents the Network Identifier and the last address is the Broadcast Address, leaving 2^(32-CIDR) - 2 addresses for usable hosts.
What is a wildcard mask and where is it used?
A wildcard mask is the bitwise inverse of a subnet mask (255.255.255.255 - SubnetMask). It is widely used in Cisco ACLs, OSPF routing configurations, and firewall packet filters.
